The International Working Group (IWG) on Women and Sport was founded in 1994 alongside the Brighton Declaration -  a landmark global framework designed to advance women and girls in sport.

Our purpose is simple: to open up more opportunities for women and girls - from playing fields to the podium - to be active and enjoy all the benefits that sport brings.

As a global “network of networks,” we connect organisations, leaders and advocates at every level, from community clubs and local programmes to elite competition and global policy. By sharing knowledge, exchanging practical tools and building relationships, we help drive real progress.

Together, we’re working to make sport more inclusive - a space where women and girls can participate, lead and thrive.

The Global Framework Driving Change

Turning commitment into impact

Created in Brighton in 1994 and updated in Helsinki in 2014, the Brighton Plus Helsinki Declaration is the world’s leading framework for advancing women and girls in sport and physical activity.

Backed by more than 600 organisations worldwide, it sets out 10 Principles designed to make sport more equal and inclusive - from leadership and resources to education and participation.

By signing, organisations show real commitment to turning words into action and join a global community working to remove barriers and expand opportunities for women and girls at every level of sport.
